The Unknown Woman of the Seine

You were found in the river ...

an immortal, sleeping beauty

who paid a small price.

Now, your plaster cast eyes are shut

beneath a smooth, pale forehead

and sculpted eyebrows.

You were pulled from the river …

         and the case pleads murder

or some other wrong-doing

but the smile on your

child-like face says:

don’t worry, I was happy.

Resusci Anne, the most kissed

face in the world, and yet,

breathless you remain.
