The third week of Camp April is almost over 🏕️
Soaking in the beautiful views, I've been spending some time at the campsite. Making friends, stargazing, and sitting by the fire. Sometimes, a slower pace is exactly what we need. Not just for our physical or mental health but also for tasks that perhaps need more focus and attention than others.
This week, I've been working on character details for my novel.
Bones & Dreams has 3 point-of-view characters alongside a variety of side characters ranging from mortals and animals to ancient deities. For each of the characters, I am filling out template profiles, making this section one of the biggest in my new process.
Thankfully, these won't all need to be 100% complete before I move on to the next section as I can add to them while I write/edit.🙂
Since you are reading this on my blog, here is a sneak peek at my progress for this week:
As you can see above, my deadline for this section of my process is next Sunday. I ended up giving myself more time for this section since it is a lot more involved regarding the amount of work that needs to be done. Here is a preview of the template categories:
I will be working on the profile templates for each character until the deadline (April 28th). But, as I mentioned earlier in this post, I can work on and update those profiles at any time while I am writing or editing. Therefore, once the deadline has passed, I will be moving on to the next section of my process regardless of how complete the profiles are by then. The main aim for the character details section is to learn and explore more about my characters: a continuous journey that never really ends until a series (or book, if it is a standalone) is complete.
Being completely honest, I was hoping to get the entirety of my new process done for this story before the end of April. However, since this is my first time testing the process out, I knew it was going to be hard to determine whether that timeframe was reasonable so early on.
It has been interesting to learn which sections will take me longer, where my expectations may have been too high (or too low), as well as what has worked so far. And, although it is good to adjust section deadlines based on findings and realisations, etc. I still want to limit how much time I spend on each section for this story and for future projects. This will help to ensure I don't end up on one part of the process for weeks or months without doing any actual writing or editing.
So, with this in mind, I believe the following schedule will be the best standard for me going forwards.
- Section 1: Starting Details --> 1 week
- Section 2: Story Structure & Narrative Depth Details --> 1 week
- Section 3: Character Details --> 2 weeks
- Section 4: Worldbuilding Details --> 2 weeks
- Section 5: Story Scenes Planning --> 1 week
Writing while also having a full time job means that some things will take me longer to complete and that's okay.🙂

If you would like to follow my journey during April's challenge, I will be posting a new update here every week. Each post will have a summary of the progress I've made as well as details about the story I'll be working on.
I will also be posting a shorter version of my updates on Instagram on the same day as the blog posts. Please feel free to check those out if you prefer quicker reading.
Stayed tuned!
