Fire

Forest fire melts leaves

like plastic, furling and falling.

Rabbit warren, a clay oven

hard and hot.

Smoke covers everything

luring, baiting

like a will-o-the-wisp.

The flames jump and dance

spurred on by the thudding

of a hundred paws and hooves.

Consuming anything

that falls before it.

A mother is trapped

protecting her litter

but the fire does not relent

until it reaches the river.
