Petals

Overgrown garden

and the throne is cracked

thorned stems surround it

in the shadows.

The red rose blooms first

enjoying the sunlight on its petals

until the white begins to unfurl.

Red and white battle for the light

growing crowded,

petals pushed together

until neither knows which

belongs to who

and soon they start to fall.

The roses rest

now almost bare

by the broken throne,

their stems withered

still hiding in the shadows.

A stranger comes to the garden

cuts the roses from the thorns

to make a single flower

from their petals

that’s then placed upon the throne.
