Novel Update: Structural Edits for Sanctuary-on-Severn!

Concept cover art by Dan Morris

I did it! I have completed the current round of structural edits for my novel, Sanctuary-on-Severn 🥳

First, a quick note, if you haven't seen my other posts on here or on Instagram:

Sanctuary-on-Severn is an alternative historical, post-apocalyptic novel set in medieval England right after the Black Death plague. It follows Maven, a determined maid hoping to escape servitude, the spoilt and childish lady she serves, as well as the many characters and challenges they meet along the way in their quest to find safety in a changed and dangerous world.

I originally wrote this story for my undergraduate and masters degree dissertations.

I am so excited to announce this news! It is the furthest I have ever gotten with editing my stories and it is an achievement I thought I would never experience.

Unfortunately, I have not yet managed to hit my word count goal for Sanctuary-on-Severn, but I was able to add almost 11,000 words by the end of the structural edits.

My next step in the editing process will be character development as well as some further story development. Both of these things will help to increase the overall word count.

But first, I am taking the advice given to most writers to let Sanctuary-on-Severn rest for a while. After spending the last three months focusing all of my creative energy on the round of structural edits I was doing, my mind is a little depleted. If I were to push on with further edits now, I would risk being struck down by burn out and writer's block (which I would prefer to avoid)!

During my rest period, I will be working on reviving another story I started writing when I was back at university: a cozy fantasy adventure quest novel starring a grouchy professor who thinks he is unworthy of others and his naive student who is as clueless as he is kind. I am excied to renew my plans for this novel! Working on a more light-hearted project that I can write without thinking (editing requires thought even while writing new scenes) is exactly what I need right now.

Don't worry, I will be returning to Sanctuary-on-Severn very soon and will share more about that project on my Instagram in the meantime - see you there!
