Meet A Character: Sanctuary on Severn Edition

Introducing, all the way from my novel Sanctuary on Severn ...

This is Theodrad:

We meet Theodrad as one of the sanctuary's younger armed wardens. Like his father and brothers before, him, he takes the responsibility of protecting both the sanctuary and its people seriously. Kind, caring, and prone to speaking before thinking, he may just become your next favourite cinnamon roll character.

More than anything, Theodrad wants to keep the people around him safe. Yet beneath his unwavering sense of duty lies a quieter longing: the desire to leave the sanctuary walls behind and discover the world beyond them. While others see a devoted warden, Theodrad can't help wondering what life migh have looked like if his future had been his own to choose.

That quiet conflict became one of my favourite aspects of writing him. He's deeply loyal to his family and he genuinely believes in the role he'd been given (though that doesn't stop him from dreaming of distant places and unfamiliar horizons). He's constantly balancing gratitude for the life he has with curiosity abou the life he might never experience.

At his core, Theodrad's story explores duty, belonging, and the tension between honouring your responsibilities and following your own path.

Theodrad chooses compassiong, even when the world gives him plenty of reasons not to. He isn't the loudest person in the room, nor the most experienced, but his willingess to see the best in others often becomes one of his greatest strenghts.

When we meet him, Theodrad believes doing the right thin means putting everyone else's needs before his won. Whether that's a strength or weakness is something he'll have to discover for himself.

Fun fact: Theodrad's birthday is October 5th (1335)

The first thing he says in the story:

'You must be the hayward's girl?' he smiled at her.

The last thing he says in the story:

'Maven, go,' Theodrad yelled as he parried against the next axe swing. 'Go … I'll find  you.'

One of my personal favourites:

'I was afraid of the dark as a child. Watching the stars used to help me sleep ... it still does sometimes.' Theodrad lay down on his blanket so he could look at the sky better.
